Welcome to Leão Marinho Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy based in Preston city centre. Our academy is headed up by Professor Paul ‘Leão Marinho’ Hartley, who works closely with the very prestigious Mauricio Gomes Legacy organisation in conjunction with Gordo BJJ Europe.

This reflects the level of coaching available at Gracie Barra Preston and is responsible for a number of champions at various competitions around the world.

With over 150 registered students and growing, the academy has recently expanded its mat space to offer even more classes for both adults and kids in its already packed timetable. The academy is open 7 days a week to make Jiu Jitsu easily accessible for all and actively encourage Jiu Jitsu for everyone.

What Our Members Say

Great place, great training, great guys. I've learned a lot and lost shed loads of weight.
Ian Ingleson

World class!! A humble place packed with future champions. Until I started practising Jiu Jitsu at GB Preston, weight lifting was my preferred way of training. Although strength does help when grappling, no matter how fit you are, muscling will fatigue you & then you're in a lot of trouble. So for me, Jiu Jitsu is essential and has changed me in many good ways. No matter how little or how large, male or female, Jiu Jitsu will make a better you.

Training one to one with Prof Paul Hartley has been invaluable in every way. I now have an ever growing understanding as to the mechanics, small but specific adjustments that make all the difference to succeeding with a technique, do's and don'ts, and reasons why. With Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the devil is in the detail and I can honestly say that every session is a revelation that continues to change and improve not only my whole perception and understanding of the physical technique but my performance and success rate.
Craig Hartley

Not only my first go at BJJ, but my first go at a Martial Art. Like many I gave it a go after getting into UFC etc and now I am hooked. No meat-head bully types, just respectful men and women learning the moves with plenty of Open Mat time for those that what to test themselves some. Give it a go!
Jon Ryley

Outstanding place to train, excellent instruction from a very professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School with a great learning and sharing culture.

I started training Jiu Jitsu with Paul just over a year ago. Previously I'd had two goes at getting into Jiu Jitsu and I can honestly say Paul is the main reason it now sticks and has become part of my life. He helped me get my blue belt and i am training harder in Jiu Jitsu than I have ever trained before. I should probably also add I am nearly 40 and Paul teaches me practical techniques that allow me to develop quicker than if I were 21. If you are interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, martial arts or just getting seriously fit. I would train with Paul every day of the week.
